Drishyam 2, starring Ajay Devgn, has given the film industry a breath of relief with its fantastic box office performance. The film grossed more than Rs 75 crore in its first four days of release and is expected to reach Rs 100 crore within one week. Now, movie exhibitor and former producer Manoj Desai assert that Drishyam 2 is the first film to play to packed audiences in his two renowned Mumbai locations, the Maratha Mandir and the Gaiety Galaxy, in many years.
“We were in tears because Bollywood films fared so poorly,” he said, “but after so many years, a film has sold out theatres.” He explained that the Gaiety Galaxy theatre can seat 1,000 people, while the Maratha Mandir theatre can seat 1,200 people, and that all Sunday performances were sold out. Even on Monday, he claimed that shows were functioning at capacities exceeding fifty percent.
If Bollywood decides to create original content, it may be able to produce even more popular films like Drishyam 2 he said. However, Bollywood is unwilling to bother,” he said. The producers will assign responsibility to the distributors, while the distributors will assign accountability to the exhibitors. They will be safeguarded, but we will be responsible for cleaning up the mess. For the first time in so long, we are bathing in the Ganga with them.”
The year 2022 was particularly difficult for Bollywood, with only four films earning box office success, two of which include addendums. While Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and The Kashmir Files were profitable exclusively through the theatrical exhibition, Brahmastra and Gangubai Kathiawadi had substantial costs to recover.
Earlier this year, Manoj Desai made headlines for criticizing Vijay Deverakonda’s ‘arrogant’ remarks on the film Liger. Subsequently, Vijay met with him, and the two appeared to have resolved their dispute.
Drishyam 2 is a remake of the Malayalam film of the same name starring Mohanlal. The original was made available on Prime Video last year. Gangubai Kathiawadi and RRR, in which he played a supporting part, have gotten positive reviews. On Tuesday, he also revealed the trailer for his upcoming flick Bhola.
